Teach for Australia came to us with a familiar problem. Recent growth meant they were running out of space.
Melodie Potts Rosevear, Founder and CEO of Teach for Australia, explains the added dilemma they were facing:
“We couldn’t relocate to a new office just yet and we were keen to move towards an agile working environment, which wasn’t supported by our previously traditional office design.”
But we like big challenges and we really like what Teach for Australia do for the community (visit their website to find out about their programs which aim to ensure all Australians get the best education regardless of socio-economic status).
How we delivered
A strong and thorough consultation process along with careful consideration of the problems with the existing space gave us a solid base for the project.
“Minimising risks and creating a sense of ownership, BRM consulted with individual members of our senior leadership team, to better understand our concerns and consider the specific needs of each team. They provided us with several opportunities to review the office design, allowing us to make important refinements at the last minute.”
The main things which helped us deliver an agile workspace on such a limited budget were:
- Re-using the best parts of the fitout and assessing what already works well. Retaining the entire front of house.
- Re-using and expanding on existing IT infrastructure.
- Making use of existing workstations and chairs in different ways.
- Finding cost-effective materials to form features. Think milk crates, foam, pool noodles, and second-hand ebay purchases!
- Marrying cost-effective furniture solutions (yes, we took a trip to IKEA) with commercial products like workstation partitions and dividers, sit to stand automated desks and Woven Image paling screens.
Making the most of a small budget
The signage and branding flow through the design and the entire space now reflects the young and dynamic feel of the organisation.
“With a much more efficient layout and agile working operations, we can now accommodate more staff in our office than ever before and the improved design has reduced our noise levels. We have a range of functional areas such as quiet pods, working pods, sit-to-stand desks and better areas for our teams to collaborate. Our office space is much more flexible now.”
Our client says that since the fitout, they’ve noticed more staff are choosing to work from the office rather than from home.
“Staff are excited about the changes, particularly by the variety of office areas they can choose to work in. Our team now has the freedom to choose where they work best. Rather than having permanent desks, our staff can now choose from a variety of different office areas. Whether that’s a traditional workspace, a collaborative workspace or in one of our meeting rooms, there’s so much more flexibility.”
